ANC salutes South Africans who registered to vote─── 08:19 Mon, 28 Jan 2019
The turnout during the final two-day voter registration this weekend ahead of the 2019 general elections was encouraging, saay the African National Congress (ANC).
"The majority of voting stations were operating smoothly. We have received reports of challenges in certain voting [polling] stations. However, we are satisfied that the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has been able to deal with any unexpected hiccups," ANC acting spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said.
"The ANC urges all its structures to ensure that our mission continues. The voter registration drive must continue. Let us sustain the momentum unleashed in the build-up and during the registration weekend. Those who have not been able to register this weekend must be assisted to visit their IEC/municipal offices to register," he said.
The party extended its gratitude to its volunteers and supporters. "We thank all volunteers and supporters on the ground as well as regional, provincial, and national leadership for their sterling work in mobilising communities across the length and breadth of the country to register," said Kodwa.
"In particular, we are encouraged to note that the vast majority of those who came to register are young people. Our special word of appreciation goes to all South Africans for responding so overwhelmingly and positively to the national call to take the future into their own hands and to help grow South Africa," he said.
The ANC also thanked the IEC staff for "a job well done". The IEC indicated that almost all of the 22,935 registration stations were open and able to afford potential voters the opportunity to register and check their details on the voters' roll.
