Fees Must Fall activist Bonginkosi Khanyile has been sentenced to three years correctional supervision, or a R5,000 fine at the Durban Regional Court on Monday.
According to SABC News the sentence means that Khanyile will be under house arrest.
eNCA reports Khanyile was convicted on public violence charges, failure to comply with a police instruction, and possession of a dangerous weapon in August last year.
Magistrate Siphiwe Hlophe praised the police for their professionalism in dealing with protestors, because they were being provoked but they did not retaliate.
He added that the court thinks Khanyile should be given the opportunity to take responsibility for his behaviour.
