D-Day for Vodacom to pay 'Please Call Me' inventor─── 08:45 Thu, 31 Jan 2019
Please Call Me' inventor Nkosana Makate wants Vodacom to pay him R70-billion for his idea by 10 am Thursday morning.
The 'Please Call Me' movement wants to stage sit-ins at stores and the Vodacom World headquarters if their demands aren't met.
But Vodacom insists it's complied with a Constitutional Court order and is ready to pay Makate.
The movement's Modise Setoaba said: “Vodacom is trying to deny black excellence, to deny Makate his invention while profiting from the invention.
"If it wasn’t profitable for Vodacom they wouldn’t have taken it internationally to countries like India, Columbia, Tanzania.”
Three years ago the Constitutional Court ordered Vodacom and Makate to negotiate and to agree on reasonable compensation.
While the amount Vodacom is offering Makate is unknown, he's rejected it as “ridiculous”.
The company says its CEO has conveyed his final decision to Makate's lawyers. It believes it followed the Constitutional Court's order and considers the matter closed.
The mobile giant is receiving even further backlash on Twitter after serving Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi with a cease-and-desist order to stop him from commenting on the matter.
A showdown now looms.
A mass gathering of civil society and political groups is set to take place at the Vodacom head office on Thursday.
