NW grade 5 learner dies from chest stab wound | News Article

A thirteen-year-old grade 5 learner at the Mateane Primary School in Diretsane village, near Delareyville in the North West, has died after he was stabbed in the chest by his grade mate, a 14-year-old.

While the details leading to the murder remain sketchy, police spokesperson in the province, Sam Tselenyane, confirmed the incident and said that the suspect has been arrested. The incident took place on Tuesday morning and the deceased was declared dead on arrival at the Atamelang Clinic. Tselenyane said the suspect will remain detained at the Bosasa Child and Youth Care Centre, as he is currently being assessed by social workers after he stabbed the deceased with a pair of scissors.

OFM News earlier contacted the spokesperson of the provincial education department, Freddy Sepeng, who has not yet responded to questions sent to him on the matter. OFM News has, however, learned that the provincial department is currently on site at the school to talk to the headmaster, as well as get further details on the matter and finally, provide support to those affected.

The province made headlines last year after a pupil stabbed a teacher in September and again in November when a grade 1 pupil was killed by a 17-year-old from another school.

This latest school killing comes days after five pupils between the ages of 15 and 17 were arrested in Limpopo for the alleged murder of 27-year-old Thoriso Themane. A video of one of the suspects has been circulating on social media, as he admits to the killing on the video, even saying that he doesn’t believe anything will happen to him because his father, a retired policeman, is untouchable.

According to an article by The Citizen, Themane’s body was found dumped at the corner of Erasmus and Cestrum Avenue in Flora Park, Polokwane. “The victim was taken to hospital but certified dead on arrival. The police were summoned and started with the initial investigations which revealed that the victim was assaulted by a group of people in the area and one person is currently taken in for questioning. The motive behind this incident is not clear at this stage but the ongoing police investigations will tell,” said the police in a statement. Meanwhile, social media users have rallied for awareness and justice for Themane under the hashtag #JusticeForThoriso.
