A policeman from the Northern Cape town of Springbok has been released on warning after he was arrested for his involvement in the theft of a state firearm in 2016.
This is according to the spokesperson of the Hawks, Hangwani Mulaudzi, who said that 24-year-old Kadri Cohen is accused of conniving with a local gang between August and November 2016, which resulted in him selling them a firearm which was stolen from the Nababeep Police Station, which was initially kept at the Police Station for safekeeping after it was used by another police officer during an alleged domestic dispute. The matter was referred to the Hawks in May last year and is currently being investigated by the Hawks’ Special Crime Investigation Unit.
The spokesperson of the Hawks at the national level, Hangwani Mulaudzi, said that while a theft case was registered, it failed to yield results after which the case was referred to the Hawks. The suspect, Cohen, allegedly gave the state firearm in question to another gang in Grabouw, which then sold it to another gang in Cape Town in exchange for drugs. Meanwhile, the firearm is yet to be recovered, however, investigations are still continuing.
Cohen was arrested on Monday and appeared on Tuesday. He has been released on a warning. Cohen will again appear on 3 May 2019.
