Central SA dominates #ComradesMarathon2019─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:27 Sun, 09 Jun 2019
Central South Africa has claimed huge bragging rights following the Comrades Marathon on Sunday.
This after Edward Mothibi, who hails from Magogoe village in Mahikeng, won the marathon with a time of 5:31:33, ahead of last year's winner Bongmusa Mthembu.
This is Mothibi’s first win following his first attempt at the major run in 2018, that saw him finishing in fourth place.
The Free State native, Gerda Steyn, also bagged the top spot for women, smashing the up-run record in the process. Steyn stopped the clock in 5:58:53, over 10 minutes faster than that the 6:09:23 of Iena Nurgalieva in 2004.
Speaking to the media following her victory, she hinted at a planned sabbatical, but told fans to "watch this space".
The North West Department of Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs posted on its Facebook page news of Mothibi’s win.
