Speaker says request to start removal proceedings against Public Protector will be sent to relevant committee─── 16:41 Fri, 14 Jun 2019
National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise will refer a request by the DA that Parliament initiate proceedings to remove the Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane from office to the justice and correctional services committee portfolio committee.
The new parliamentary committees have yet to convene following the May elections and will only sit in July to elect chairpersons and determine their respective programmes.
"Once established, the portfolio committee on justice and correctional services will give attention to the request," a statement from Parliament said.
DA chief whip John Steenhuisen had previously asked for removal proceedings against Mkhwebane after the High Court in Pretoria ruled she had grossly over-reached her powers by recommending a constitutional amendment to change the mandate of the SA Reserve Bank.
In February, the former justice portfolio committee decided to recommend that the National Assembly not insitute removal proceedings against Mkhwebane, saying it was premature.
Last month, the same court ruled against Mkhwebane in another matter. The high court overturned her report on the Estina dairy farm project, declaring it unconstitutional and invalid after the DA challenged her investigation saying the outcome was a “whitewash” as implicated politicians were never interviewed and thus escaped scrutiny.
