Authorities launch campaign to curb road carnage | News Article

Motorists are being warned to be responsible on the road as transport authorities are promising unprecedented action from October to stop the carnage on our roads.

Approximately one million accidents are reported in the country every year, resulting in more than 14,000 fatalities.

Authorities say most of the drivers on South African roads obtained their licences illegally.

"We’re now moving to a level that’s unprecedented. We’re finalising the collation of the data of all those who got their driver's licences wrongly through fraud and corruption. We’re now approaching the courts.

"As we arrest them we ask the courts to take away their licences, so they’re taken off our roads," said RTMC CEO Makhosini Msibi.

Meanwhile, Msibi says road safety is set to become part of the school curriculum.

“Road safety is going to become part of the curriculum from grade R to 12. We believe if kids are taught about road safety at a tender stage, they’ll grow up being responsible road users.”
