NW municipal oversight meetings underway─── 05:27 Wed, 23 Oct 2019
Oversight meetings are currently being held by the North West Provincial Legislature in order to discuss annual reports as well as the state of intervention in municipalities.
These meetings come a week after the municipal manager, Pogisho Shikwane and financial officer, Olga Ndlovu of the Bojanala District Municipality in Rustenburg, were suspended due to alleged fraud.
The two were instructed to present reasons why they should not be suspended, but the council consequently believed that there is reasonable evidence of misconduct, which led to immediate suspension.
The standing committee on provincial public accounts finance management will meet with the municipality this week to account for allegations of financial mismanagement.
The suspension and dissolution of municipal councils, under section 139 of the Constitution, gives provincial executives the ability to intervene when a municipality fails to fulfil an executive obligation in terms of the constitution or legislation.
