Cekeshe's family celebrates activist's release from prison | News Article

Kanya Cekeshe's family is celebrating after the Fees Must Fall activist was released from prison in the early hours of this morning.

He was sentenced to eight years behind bars, with three years suspended for his involvement in the university protest action.

Cekeshe was released from Leeuwkop prison, in terms of President Cyril Ramaphosa's "remission of sentences".

His friend Nkanyiso Ngqulunga said the family is happy and is looking forward to spending Christmas with him.

"The family is very, very happy, ever since yesterday [despite] issues because in fact he was supposed to be released yesterday.

They were at Leeuwkop waiting for his release and there was an issue with his DNA. But this morning they were very, very much happy about his release and he's at home now. It's a very happy moment for all of us," said Ngqulunga.

Ngqulunga said he is looking forward to seeing Cekeshe following his release.
