#Coronavirus: SAA regional flights suspended─── MARVIN NTSANE 16:36 Mon, 23 Mar 2020
The South African Airways (SAA) has suspended regional flights. The airline says due to the suspension of international flights, there has been an "immediate drastic" reduction of demand for African regional flights.
This follows after the cash-strapped SAA suspended its international flights in response to the government’s travel ban aimed at stopping the transmission of Covid-19 with immediate effect last week.
The flights that are suspended are to destinations including Accra (Ghana), Lusaka (Zambia), Harare (Zimbabwe), Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), Windhoek (Namibia), Lagos (Nigeria), and Entebbe (Uganda).
The suspensions will be in place until 31 May 2020.
SAA says they will, however, continue to render services on its domestic route between Johannesburg and Cape Town.
"SAA is a network carrier, which means that a significant part of the regional booking demand is fed by the passengers that travel to or from the international destinations. Therefore, the suspension of the international flights has resulted in the airline not being able to operate its normal network," said SAA.
