Lack of ICT in schools a cause for concern─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:33 Tue, 24 Mar 2020
According to the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education learners throughout the country need access to computer facilities at school.
Following the recent report on the roll-out of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by the Department of Basic Education, it highlighted that the time has come for Minister Angie Motshekga's department to ensure e-Education becomes a reality in South Africa.
The Committee is meanwhile urging Motshekga to ensure teachers across the different provinces are trained on ICT integration, and on how to make teaching and learning easier through the use of modern day technology.
The progress report presented by the Education Department indicates there is a need for infrastructure development at many schools to enable digital integration, and that provinces still lagging behind include the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and the North West.
The report on schools' infrastructure, tabled before the Education Portfolio Committee, further indicates that just over 17 000 schools have to date been integrated into the ICT program, and that more still needs to be done, particularly for Special Needs Schools and those in remote rural areas.
