National taxi strike averted─── 15:33 Tue, 31 Mar 2020
A nationwide taxi strike has been averted. The shutdown was meant to happen on Wednesday in protest against government's lockdown regulations.
These limit the number of passengers taxis may transport.
Provincial government representatives and taxi associations met on Monday and raised a number of complaints regarding the conditions of service under the national 21-day lockdown.
Santaco spokesperson, Thabiso Molelekwa, said confusion about communication between provincial government regarding the regulations to be followed has led to problems, including difficulties with law enforcement.
Molelekwa said it was unfortunate that the discussions suggesting a strike were leaked to the media as they were not established as a plan.
Molelekwa said the issues raised by the taxi associations have been resolved following the meeting with the government representatives.
