ANC condemns food price increases during lockdown─── 06:21 Thu, 23 Apr 2020
The African National Congress (ANC) has spoken out against the increase of food prices at large retail stores.
The party’s Deputy Secretary-General, Jessie Duarte, says this is not the time to increase food prices as the country is going into 27 days of lockdown.
“There is a shop that sold cabbage for R58… this is incorrect. This is a time that food should be lowered so that people who are not working and day wage earners can buy food.
“We must appeal to all retail stores to take into account that these are special circumstances, these are extraordinary circumstances and while the government is leaving no-one out, food retailers must also make sure that no one is unable to buy food,” says Duarte.
