WHO commends SA on #COVID19 response | News Article

The World Health Organization has commended South Africa on its response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Executive director Dr Michael Ryan says the country has done an impressive job in bringing the spread of the virus under control.

Seven more people have died of COVID-19 in South Africa. That brings the total death toll to 65.

Five of the patients died in the Western Cape and two in KwaZulu-Natal.

The number of infections has also increased by 170.

The latest number of people who've recovered is 1,005.

Since lockdown started on 27 March, the number of cases increased from 1,170 to 3,635.

These numbers will play a role when President Cyril Ramaphosa addresses the nation on Thursday on the next phase of lockdown.

The WHO warned that the coronavirus crisis will not end any time soon as the global death toll surpassed 180,000.

The pandemic has sparked not only a health emergency, but a global economic rout, with businesses struggling to survive, millions left jobless, and millions more facing starvation.

With businesses shuttered and millions of jobs lost, the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) said the virus crisis would hit the least privileged the hardest.

It said the number of people suffering from acute hunger was projected to nearly double to 265 million this year.
