Man arrested for trying to defraud NW municipality─── LUCKY NKUYANE 06:36 Tue, 28 Apr 2020
An alleged fraudster claiming to represent a non-profit organisation (NPO) is expected to appear at the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court today.
This follows after the 26-year-old man was busted on Friday after he allegedly attempted to sell face masks, said to have been acquired through fraudulent means, to the Rustenburg Local Municipality during a meeting in North West.
Municipal spokesperson, David Magae, says during the meeting the suspect promised to supply at least 70% of health equipment on the condition that the municipality pays more than R6 million cash in advance.
He adds that following this request the mayor and the speaker grew suspicious, and did a background check which led to the suspect's arrest.
Magae says the suspect also has a pending case of fraud in Gauteng.
