The total number of Covid-19 tests carried out to date was 245,747. Of these, 123,580 were carried out in the private sector and 122,167 in the public sector, Mkhize said in a statement on Sunday night.
As of April 30, a total of 7,216,777 citizens had been screened. Of these, 72,087 had been referred for testing, Mkize said.
"We thank all these compatriots for their solidarity with the [community screening] programme and allowing our healthcare workers into the privacy of their homes.
"Regrettably, we report a further eight Covid-19-related deaths - two from the Western Cape, four from the Eastern Cape, and two from Gauteng. This brings the total deaths to 131. We wish to express our condolences to the families of the deceased and salute the healthcare workers who treated the deceased patients," Mkhize said.
