Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says a new regulation will be issued that allows long-distance travellers to bypass the Covid-19 curfew.

Many South Africans were left stranded on the side for the road after being stopped by police over the past weekend.

The government has imposed a curfew between 8pm and 5am as part of a raft of measures to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Provision for once-off travel between provinces, metros and districts came into effect on Friday, to allow South Africans who were not at home or work when the national lockdown began, to move around.

Mbalula addressed the media on Monday after he assessed Gautrain’s state of readiness to restart operations.

Mbalula admitted that the circumstances surrounding public transport during the one-way travel week were not considered.

"We did not address the question of how do we integrate long distance to the regulations.

"This past weekend people were stranded on the road because they were stopped by law enforcement and they were meant to stay overnight because of the curfew.”

He added: "I wish to apologise to everybody who got inconvenienced by that and we are sorting that issue.”

Mbalula says discussions are underway between himself, Cooperative Governance Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Minister of Police Bheki Cele.

"This morning we are looking at passing a direction that enables long-distance to be able to be sorted out for the period from the first to the seventh so that we address the exceptional circumstances of long-distance travelling.

"By the end of today we gazette the direction that will enable long-distance travel, particularly public transport.”
