Unions at the airline bagged a crucial victory on Friday after the Labour Court in Johannesburg ordered the business rescue practitioners to withdraw retrenchment notices.

The court ruled that the notices issued to SAA workers were procedurally unfair because a business rescue plan had not been presented.

The business rescue practitioners are now expected to publish a final business rescue plan on 29 May (at the end of this month).

However, the National Transport Movement says SAA still faces the possibility of going into liquidation before then - if government does not provide the necessary funds.

Spokesperson Mashudu Raphetha says the court's decision has provided unions with a transitory victory.
