Safety at schools remains a priority - Motshekga | News Article

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says they cannot keep postponing the reopening of schools and they are certain schools will be ready by June 8.

This, after her department last night at the eleventh hour announced that Grade 12 and 7 learners should not return to schools this morning as a number of schools are not ready. Addressing the media on Monday, Motshekga says once schools resume next week, sporting activities and cultural activities will remain suspended. She further announced that they have lost an entire term and cannot afford to lose more days. Motshekga says the health and safety of learners is a main concern and that the reopening of schools must adhere to health and safety protocols. She confirmed that this week will be used for induction and orientation as well as for final preparations.

Meanwhile, the MEC of Education in the Free State, Tate Makgoe, has taken to Twitter to confirm that water tanks in the Free State are being delivered to schools.

Makgoe said the safety of learners and teachers is of high importance and he confirms that water tanks have been delivered to at least 87 schools in the Thabo Mofutsanyane and Xhariep districts.

Motshekga further sent a reminder to parents who are not comfortable sending their children to schools that they are obliged to apply for home schooling and ensure that they meet all conditions that apply under home schooling.
