#YouthMonth: Young people urged to play a part against #Covid19 | News Article

The triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment have once again come in the spotlight as the country today marks the first day of Youth Month and thousands of people return to their workplaces.

In a virtual launch of the 2020 Youth Month, the Deputy Minister of Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Hlengiwe Mkhize, says the month of June remains an important month in the history of the country. She says this month not only allows the country to reflect back on the contribution made by young people in the liberation struggle, but it is a month when the country also commemorates the youth of today. Mkhize says as the country continues to battle against the spread of the Coronavirus, the year 2020 is going to be another historical year where young people will be remembered for the role they played.

She adds that their role in Covid-19 awareness programmes - ensuring that there is social distancing, the wearing of masks and that all regulations are adhered to - will form part of that history.

Whilst she acknowledged that youth unemployment is amongst some of the key challenges the government is still grappling with, she urged young people to play their part in ensuring that lives are saved and that the Covid-19 curve is flattened.
