The health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Thursday that the cumulative number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa is 168,061, with 95 new deaths.


Case data shows that the Western Cape still has the highest rate of infections. The Western Cape has been deemed the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic in South Africa, with the health department recording 65,841 (39.2 percent) of Covid-19 covid cases, 46,515 recoveries and 1,896 deaths, media reports say. 

Gauteng has the second highest infection rate with 49,937 (29.7 percent), Eastern Cape with 30,603 (18.2 percent) and KwaZulu-Natal with 11,669 (6.9 percent).

North West, with 4,788 makes up just 2.8 percent of the confirmed cases; Free State has 1,886; Mpumalanga, 1,478; Limpopo, 1,286 and Northern Cape, 573.

To date 1,706,127 tests have been completed in total of which 39,188 new tests are reported, the minister said in the statement. The private sector conducted 892,129 (52 percent) of the tests and the public sector, 813,998. 

The health minister said in the statement that a further 95 Covid-19 deaths were reported - 12 from Eastern Cape, 38 from Gauteng, 16 from KwaZulu-Natal and 29 from Western Cape. 

"This brings the total deaths to 2,844. We wish to express our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased," the minister said in the statement. 

The mortality rate is 1.7 percent and the "number of recoveries is 81,999, which translates to a recovery rate of 48.8 percent".
