The Police trainees’ intake programme has been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.
Police Minister, Bheki Cele, confirms the 2020 intake programme was at an advanced stage, but has been suspended until further notice due to the virus and subsequent lockdown regulations.
Cele, in a parliamentary response to opposition parties, confirmed the recruitment plan of the police is being reviewed in order to respond to the Covid-19 restrictions put in place.
His response comes amidst growing concerns regarding the police’s capacity to maintain law and order during the lockdown period. Cele, however, says members of the police and reservists are still being deployed for routine operations and enforcement of the Coronavirus preventative measures.
Cele adds the filling of other vacancies within the police is continuing, although it has not been possible to enlist new members to report for training.
