NUMSA slams possible ArcelorMittal retrenchments | News Article

Members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) will picket at all offices of ArcelorMittal in South Africa due to the possible retrenchment of employees.

According to NUMSA spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi- Majola, the union is reaching out to every member to join the peaceful strike.

NUMSA believes management, led by current CEO Kobus Verster, lacks progressiveness and is using the Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse to leave hundreds jobless.

‘’AMSA is in the process of consulting employees as part of the section 189 process, and is contemplating retrenchments. It has also proposed that salaries and benefits must be reduced by 20 percent as an alternative to retrenchments. Picketing will take place at ArcelorMittal in Sedibeng, Vanderbijlpak, Vereeniging, Pretoria and Newcastle,’, says Hlubi-Majola.

NUMSA members will begin picketing this morning at 8:00, and a memorandum of demands will be handed over to AMSA management by 10:00.
