#Covid19: Rise in cases expected - Karim─── 12:13 Mon, 17 Aug 2020
Professor Salim Abdool Karim says within ten days, South Africa should expect a slight rise in Covid-19 cases.
This will come with the reopening of some economic sectors.
"We need to be aware that the threat is ever-present. We need to ensure that infections continue to decline. We expect that there may be a slight increase in cases. Around the 28 of August. If we don't see that, or if we see a small increase, we can be confident that the easing has not had a major impact."
He's urging South Africans to continue practising strict measures to prevent infection.
The Covid-19 death toll in South Africa is 11,839.
According to the Health Department, 8 out of every ten people who've tested positive for Covid-19 have recovered.
The recoveries are now at 472,377, translating to a recovery rate of 80%.
