#CoronavirusSA: Mangosuthu Buthelezi recovers from #Covid19─── 06:36 Fri, 21 Aug 2020
Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the founder and former president of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has recovered from Covid-19 and is in good health, his family said on Thursday.
The family announced on August 8 that 91-year-old Buthelezi, a diabetic, had been diagnosed with the virus, was asymptomatic, and was self-isolating.
In Thursday's statement, the Buthelezi family said that throughout his isolation period, the long serving statesman had remained asymptomatic, but continued to "take every precaution" necessary.
Buthelezi will be turning 92 on August 27.
"He has today received a negative test result, confirming that he is no longer infected. Indeed, his full medical tests have provided us with complete assurance that he is in good health," said Dr Bhekuyise Ngqengelele Buthelezi, family spokesperson.
"We thank the Lord Almighty for His goodness. We appreciate all those who sent messages of support and particularly those who diligently prayed for uMntwana wa KwaPhindangene. We also wish to thank the media for respecting this time away from his many duties."
Ngqengelele Buthelezi said he hoped that the politician's recovery would encourage other families that were facing "this daunting journey".
"We were acutely aware throughout this time that his age, and the added vulnerability of chronic diabetes, placed him at greater risk. The fact that he has come through this unscathed is an encouragement to us all."
Ngqengelele Buthelezi said the family urged all South Africans to continue taking all necessary precautions so that the country could "win the ongoing battle" against the virus.
