The teenager with special needs was shot on Wednesday night and died at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.

The community alleges Julius was shot by police members. It caused anger, with residents taking to the streets on Thursday in their demand for action against the police. It led to violent clashes between residents and law enforcement.

IPID spokesperson Ndileka Cola says investigators were in the area on Thursday but struggled to access the scene due to the volatile situation.

"When they ultimately managed to access it, it was almost impossible to conduct interviews as the community was violent.

However, IPID officials managed to visit the family of the deceased person and the family liaison has been done," says Cola.

She says further investigations include more interviews with police, eyewitnesses, ballistics, and probing the postmortem report.

Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier David Makhura has condemned the killing and called on the community to wait for the IPID report.

“I am very disturbed about the events that led to the passing of an innocent boy. I would like to send my sincere condolences to the Julius family on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government,” said Makhura.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has demanded that the police officer who shot and killed the child be suspended with immediate effect.

"The police officer must be immediately be put in jail with no bail, and he must be criminally prosecuted. As the EFF, we will make sure that the deceased find justice and we will not rest until his killers are in jail," reads an EFF statement.
