Covid-19 funds and how the government has been spending billions to curb the spread of the virus will today come under public scrutiny.

This, as the Auditor-General, Kimi Makwetu, is expected to release the country's Covid-19 relief funds audit during a media briefing at 11:00.

OFM News on Monday reported that the report will come amidst growing concerns over the use of relief funds by the different provinces as well as how politicians - including high rank officials - are allegedly enriching themselves and those with close ties to them.

Covid-19 corruption allegations against former Free State premier Ace Magashule and current Northern Cape premier Zamani Saul are among those that have recently made headlines and drew much controversy to regions in central South Africa.

Whilst allegations involving the misuse of these funds and tenders awarded to high ranking politicians - including those in the Presidency's office - has been refuted by many, the audit report by the AG is expected to shed light on how these funds have been used.

OFM News recently reported on contracts with a combined value of R2.7 million in the Free State that were awarded to Motheko Projects and Marvel Deeds, owned by Magashule’s sons.

It is alleged Tshepiso Magashule and his younger brother Thato benefited from the Free State Treasury to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) amidst the Coronavirus as a result of their father's close relationship with the MEC for Finance.

Whilst the Free State Treasury Department has since defended the awarding of tenders to Magashule's sons, stating that the companies tendered just like any other company in the province and met the criteria, the news has been received with mixed reactions from social media users and opposition parties.

Following media reports over Covid-19 corruption in the Northern Cape, Premier Zamani Saul has distanced himself from allegations that his close allies have benefited from Covid-19 funds.

Saul maintains he has nothing to do with any PPE tenders in the province nor the looting of any funds.

He, in a statement, said there is seemingly an attempt to taint his reputation and efforts against corruption.
