Higher Education to provide #GBV, mental health assistance─── LEATILE LEIEE 10:28 Thu, 01 Oct 2020
The Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, announced that Higher Education will introduce a 24-hour toll-free landline for students facing gender-based violence and mental health challenges.
Nzimande says the service will be run by experienced psychologists, social workers and councillors and be supported by the South Africa Depression and Anxiety Group. The initiative will aim to assist both returning students and students who are learning from home in psycho-health challenges faced due to Covid-19. He says over the past two weeks since its launch, the service has managed to assist over 500 individuals.
The landline will be operational 24 hours daily to assist students in need to avoid tragic consequences. During a briefing and update regarding Higher Education under level 1, Nzimande said that students are encouraged to contact the landline on 0800-36-36-36.
