President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to present his long-awaited Covid-19 economic recovery plan to Parliament on Thursday.

It comes weeks after Statistics South Africa released figures showing that millions lost their jobs in the second quarter of the year.

The Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) report presented by Statistician Risenga Maluleke showed that the South African economy shed 2,2 million jobs in the second quarter of the year and that employment losses were observed across all industries.

The highest official and expanded unemployment rates were recorded in the Eastern Cape, followed by Gauteng at 26.4% then the Free State at 25.3%.

The Northern Cape is the fourth province with the highest unemployment rate at 25.1% and 45.1% expanded unemployment rate.

The North West meanwhile recorded an unemployment rate of 21.6% for the second quarter of 2020.

Maluleke confirmed the number of unemployed South Africans declined to 23.3% whilst the number of expanded unemployment increased with young people and women still the hardest hit.

Ramaphosa is expected to address both the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) at 14:00.
