Taxpayers have been warned that government will increase the country’s taxes over the next four years.

The increase was confirmed by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni during the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement on Wednesday.

Mboweni said government has projected a R5 billion tax increase for the year 2021/2022.

This will be followed by an increase of R10 billion in 2022/23, R10 billion in 2023/24 and R15 billion in 2024/25.

It is not yet known what items or areas will be taxed to assist in the collection of government revenue.

Treasury’s Ismail Momoniat said South Africans will have to wait until February’s budget to hear all the details.

“I think the key with tax is that we only make announcements on budget day. So you're gonna have to wait until budget day to talk about the revenue that we are going to need and we tend to then look from now until budget day to look at  what can be done.

“On the other hand we are looking at the R40 billion figure over four years. We are looking at R25 billion over three years."
