#IEC geared for by-elections─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:44 Mon, 02 Nov 2020
With only 10 days to go before 96 municipal ward by-elections, scheduled to take place in different parts of the country on November 11, the IEC has declared its state of readiness.
The by-elections, which will take place in 56 municipalities across the country, are expected to affect over 600 000 registered voters.
OFM News previously reported that voter registration proceeded without major hiccups. Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) spokesperson in the Free State, Mmathabo Rasengane, confirmed the by-elections will include two wards in the Mangaung Metro Municipality and one in the Mohokare Municipality.
This, after the wards became vacant as a result of the death of councillors. Rasengane said the November 11 by-elections will be held under strict Covid-19 protocols as they aim to ensure the safety of voters, election staff, party agents, observers, and all those involved.
She, in a statement, highlighted "these include implementing strict social distancing practices outside and inside voting stations along with the use of hand sanitisers as voters enter and exit the voting station".
Voters, election staff, and all those entering the voting station will be required to wear a mask at all times. Voters are also encouraged to bring their own pens to mark their ballot papers, although pens will be provided and sanitised after each use.
The IEC also confirms this past weekend's voter registration was without many hiccups. Voter registration was held this past weekend for two municipal ward by-elections scheduled to take place in different parts of the Free State on December 9.
