Police Minister, Bheki Cele, will on Friday officially release crime statistics for the second quarter of 2020/21.

In a media briefing set to take place at noon, Cele will present the level of crime in the country, outline whether criminal activities have increased or decreased as well as measures the police are planning to put in place to up their fight against crime.

His spokesperson, Lirandzu Themba, has confirmed these statistics will show the crime levels during the time when the country moved from Lockdown level 3 to levels 2 and 1 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The release of the latest crime statistics come just a day after lack of rural safety and escalating farm attacks came under much public scrutiny in the Free State.

During Cele's visit to the Free State on Thursday, issues regarding stock theft and attack of farmers and their families were sharply raised by organised farming community organisations.

Many pointed out that the buck did not stop with the infamous murder of the 21-year-old farm manager Brendin Horner, and that many more farmers have lost their lives since then.

Farmers who met Cele at the Bethlehem Community Hall further expressed concern at the number of police officers who are allegedly involved in criminal activities and cases of stock theft.
