De Bruin's 24-year-old son was shot and killed by a South African Police Services (SAPS) official on Tuesday during an alleged botched robbery.

The police earlier in the week alleged that the deceased and two other men were caught red-handed by the officer, who shot at them ten times.

The former councillor raised concerns about the incident, and said that he was unhappy because the police never came to his house to inform him about the said incident.

The deceased was allegedly caught with a plasma screen television set in the house.

De Bruin said in an interview with OFM News that he was woken up by a friend in the early hours of the morning to alert him to the incident.

Independent Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Ndileka Cola, said that they are investigating a case of murder against the police officer, who is stationed at the organised crime unit.

She did not elaborate if the officer was suspended or continuing to carry out his duties.
