The country has a population of close to 60 million people. While South Africa's recovery rate remains over 90%, authorities have expressed concern over a suspected resurgence of the virus - especially within some parts of the Eastern Cape, including the Nelson Mandela Bay and Sarah Baartman Municipalities.

Since the last report, the nation has recorded 2 888 new cases and 123 more Covid-19 related deaths.

Seventeen of those occurred within the last 24 hours and four were in the Eastern Cape. In his recent visit to the province, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize appealed to the provincial government to be more aggressive in dealing with the surge in cases.

He said the local government needed to apply all its efforts to halting looming cluster outbreaks.

Bhisho committed that it would ramp up its testing and screening to fight the scourge.
