Workers ready for #SABC blackout─── 08:00 Fri, 20 Nov 2020
If you tune in to the SABC on Friday afternoon, you could be greeted by a black screen as members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) are planning to strike.
It follows the planned retrenchments of 400 employees. Meanwhile, SABC board Chairperson Bongumusa Makhathini has denied that the Communications Minister was in the dark about restructuring.
There is much division regarding the planned retrenchment of 400 people at the public broadcaster.
On Tuesday, staff clashed with management over the job losses.
"The truth of the matter is management met with the Department and National Treasury on a monthly basis to update them on a number of things. It is not entirely correct that there hasn't been any update given on this matter. But of course, we report to the minister on a quarterly basis," said Makhathini.
"We don't necessarily have to be reported outside of those reporting guidelines because we need time to execute and implement the agreement and resolution."
Makhathini also added that all due processes were followed in the decision to cut jobs.
