The battle for control of the ANC will continue in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday when supporters of former president Jacob Zuma will flex their influence at his court appearance.

ANC Secretary-General and Zuma loyalist Ace Magashule managed to stave off an attempt to remove him from his position at the party's NEC this weekend.

His allies argued an ANC Nasrec resolution compelling people who are criminally charged to step down is unconstitutional.

They’ve vowed to demonstrate their support within the ANC when Zuma returns to court.

The MKMVA claims the ANC's leadership has divided the party during one of its most turbulent periods.

One analyst believes while supporting Zuma on Tuesday may not have any benefits - the former president is a useful rallying point.

“He becomes a useful object of [the] organisation to pull all of those together who still have a material interest in influencing the direction of the ANC in the next conference in 2022," said analyst Lukhona Mgnuni.

"It gives them a political profile that they ordinarily may not have. And it almost legitimises them to say ‘we are not plotting, we are supporting president Jacob Zuma'.”

The ANC says its leaders and members may only attend Zuma’s trial in their personal capacities.

But the MKMVA has promised thousands will once again be there to support the former president.
