Police Minister, Bheki Cele says the decision to close beaches on the Garden Route was based on advice from the health department.
The Western Cape district has been declared a COVID-19 hotspot.
Its beaches are closed until 3 January.
This decision is now being challenged by AfriForum. Cele was checking on compliance in Cape Town.
