He said the first roll-out phase, which will target health and other frontline workers, will make use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

"We have secured 9 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The first batch, of 80,000 doses, will arrive in the country next week. The success of the vaccination programme will rely on active collaboration between all sectors of society and the health and safety of our people remain our prominent concern as the success of the vaccine will rely on all parts of society,” said Ramaphosa.

“We will, as a country, continue to use a science-driven approach which has served us so well since the earliest days of the pandemic. We will overcome this challenge again. However, we have to defeat more than just a disease as we must overcome poverty, hunger and joblessness in South Africa, as well as a legacy of exclusion which continues to impoverish South Africans.

"Defeating the COVID-19 pandemic, is primary in everything we have to do," he concluded
