#SONA2021: Crime compromises, weakens SA - Ramaphosa─── 20:48 Thu, 11 Feb 2021
President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke - during his State of the Nation Address - extensively about the impact crime has on the country and its people.
He said corruption is “one of the greatest impediments to the country’s growth and development. This, he said, was laid bare by some of the revelations in front of the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture. Ramaphosa said these testimonies have shown how the criminal justice system was compromised and weakened.
He said it is therefore imperative that the momentum of rebuilding effort be sustained and he commended the fusion centre - which brings together key law enforcement agencies - that was established in response of allegations of corruption and fraud in its efforts to investigate and prosecute these type of cases. Ramaphosa said it has brought many cases to trial and preserved or recovered millions in public funds.
"We continue to provide care and support to survivors of gender-based violence. In the State of the Nation Address last year, I said that we would prioritise the economic empowerment of women. Ramaphosa said several departments have started implementing this procurement policy – stating that 40% of government procurement must be awarded to women-owned businesses – toward economic empowerment for women. He further warned that gender-based violence will only end when everyone takes responsibility for doing so in their homes, in their communities, in their workplaces, in their places of worship and in their schools. Task teams have been formed to combat these crimes.
