Commuters face challenges during #MangaungShutdown─── 05:30 Thu, 20 May 2021
Commuters between Bloemfontein, Thaba Nchu and Botshabelo remained stranded on the third day of the Mangaung shutdown.
Despite earlier indications that protest actions might come to an end, by late Wednesday public transport between Bloemfontein, Thaba Nchu and Botshabelo had yet to be restored. Daily commuters waited in large groups for hours at various pickup points along the N8 road. One commuter, Vuyo Manyashe, says that there has not been transport available from Thaba Nchu since the early hours of Tuesday. He adds that his wait for public transport had been delayed by close to an hour since his arrival at the taxi rank.
OFM News can confirm that the N8 road has been cleared of any barricades that may previously have been there and that the road is accessible after it was closed down on the second day of the protests. Public transport is steadily growing, however, many commuters are unsure of whether or not they will make their way back home upon travelling to their workplaces, among other things.
Roads in Bloemfontein, specifically in rural areas such as Rocklands and Heidedal, remain almost completely barricaded making maneuvering an intricate situation. This may be because of damage to vehicles.
However, public transport in and around Bloemfontein, including Interstate Bus Lines' routes, was almost fully functional to and from the majority of the areas and workplaces.
