Members of the Mangaung Community Concern – the organisation behind the protest action – said their main concerns are around issues of the municipality.

They demanded the disbanding of the metro council and asked that the lack of service delivery, the high unemployment, the lack of business opportunities for local companies, and the lack of land for businesses and residential purposes be addressed.

Salga provincial spokesperson, Thabang Sikisi, says they are concerned over the unfolding of events in the municipality. He says they are aware of the complexity of the grievances raised by concerned residents, but urged residents to refrain from violence.
