Covid-19 vaccines currently being rolled out are effective against the Delta variant, according to Professor Tulio de Oliveira of the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform, KRISP.
He says the vaccines are even more effective against Delta than previous variants and that the vaccines have an 89 percent efficacy when it comes to protection against severe symptoms.
Meanwhile, 15,036 new Covid-19 infections have been reported in the last 24-hours.
Gauteng accounts for just over 9,800 of them.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said 122 more Covid-19 related deaths were recorded.
