#Election2021: IEC told 16 million to be vaccinated ahead of October polls─── 05:29 Tue, 29 Jun 2021
At least 16 million people should be vaccinated by the time South Africans go to the polls.
Well, that's at least what the Independent Electoral Commission has been told.
There have been calls to have this year's local government elections - on 27 October - postponed.
Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said the information availed to the IEC is that 16 million people would have been vaccinated by 27 October.
"It may be that the targets have changed since, but that is the official information that was placed at the disposal of the commission and political parties, at least as at 22 April."
The IEC also said it's looking into how lockdown regulations will affect voter registration.
The country has been placed on lockdown Level 4.
Voter registration is expected to take place on 17 and 18 July.
"The commission will be making pronouncements having had [an] opportunity to analyse the regulations and their influence on the possibility of an efficient voter registration weekend," Mamabolo said.
