Tensions ease in Nkandla as ConCourt agrees to hear Zuma application─── 07:22 Sun, 04 Jul 2021
Tensions have calmed down outside former president Jacob Zuma’s home in Nkandla following developments at the Constitutional Court.
In a dramatic twist of events on Saturday, the apex court agreed to hear an application for a rescission of the contempt ruling against him.
The standoff between Zuma and the judiciary escalated earlier this week when the former statesman was slapped with a 15-month jail sentence.
Zuma supporters and allies descended on northern KwaZulu-Natal in the following days, raising concerns of possible unrest in the province.
In his application, he raised concerns about the Covid-19 crisis and his ailing health as a last-ditch plea to avoid serving time.
The court will hear Zuma’s application on July 12.
Meanwhile, Zuma has also approached the Pietermaritzburg High Court to stay a committal of arrest as the Sunday deadline loomed.
Instead, he’s expected to address supporters outside his home on Sunday evening.
