Certain parts of the country are expected to reach a maximum of 40 degrees, as temperatures begin warming amid the approaching summer season.

According to the South African Weather Service, Vredendal in the Western Cape is expected to peak at 40 degrees Celsius.

“At the moment we are seeing temperatures warming up, and that is quite normal for this time of the year. So they don’t constitute a heatwave just yet. We have quite hot temperatures in the Western Cape province. About 40 degrees is expected in Vredendal,” says forecaster Kgolofelo Mahlangu.

Other places in the Western Cape that will experience boiling temperatures include Oudtshoorn (36), while Beaufort West. Worcester and Riversdadale will all peak at 35 degrees.

Bloemfontein is expected to reach 35 degrees on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, as is Kimberley, going one better on Wednesday with 36 degrees. Potchefstroom and Rustenburg in North West can expect maximum temperatures ranging between 34 and 36 degrees towards the end of the week.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg and Pretoria will also experience warmer temperatures this week. Johannesburg is expected to peak at 30 degrees by the end of the week, while Pretoria will reach a high of 33.
