Police Minister Bheki Cele has encouraged officers to use their weapons to protect themselves.
Speaking in Cape Town on Monday, Cele said officers should not allow criminals to take advantage of them.
Cele told police officers to pull no punches when dealing with criminals during the holiday period.
The minister also talked tough about gender-based violence.
He has especially warned male police officers to adhere to their oath of office and refrain from harassing female colleagues.
