The Minister of Employment and Labour, Thembelani Nxesi, has lashed out at truck drivers after they blocked national roads last week.

Nxesi said what he calls propaganda witnessed by the trucking industry must be stopped and treated as sabotage and staged crimes. This after OFM News reported on irate truck drivers who demonstrated their frustrations as they partially blocked the R34 and N12 roads in North West last week.

The secretary of All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied SA (ATDF ASA), Sifiso Nyathi, had expressed his frustrations with employers and the government for being reluctant in removing foreign nationals from the trucking industry.

While responding to the calls of the truck drivers, Nxesi said that President Cyril Ramaphosa has mandated an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC), led by him, and include the ministers of Transport Fikile Mbalula and Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motswaledi, to address concerns raised by truck drivers.

He said that IMC has been working hard to address issues raised by truck drivers.

Meanwhile it has been reported that the strike which has ended resulted in gridlocked traffic and delays on major arteries of the economy.

About 80% of South Africa’s goods are carried by road, according to the Road Freight Association (RFA), which has estimated that the compounded damage to the economy as a result disruptions could be around R300 million.
