'People of Khayelitsha must be as safe as people of Camps Bay'─── 08:21 Fri, 23 Dec 2022
Police Minister Bheki Cele says tourists must be protected and feel safe, but this shouldn't be at the expense of South Africans.
Cele was speaking at a ceremony in the Western Cape to welcome about 1000 recruits. This, as police officials in the province are hoping for a peaceful Christmas and festive season.
"I know that this is a tourist destination and those tourists must be safe as they move around," says Cele. "But there should be no more emphasis on tourists at the expense of the local citizens.
"There is this idea that the police should be there protecting tourists. Do it, but not at the expense of the local citizens, not at the expense of the people in Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Delft, Samora and Harare.
"People must be safe wherever they are in the Western Cape. There should be no more visibility in some places than others.
"People that are living and staying and sleeping in Khayelitsha must feel like those people that live in Camps Bay.
"Tourists must be safe. Keep them safe. But not more than the original people of this province of South Africa."
