“The social sciences category had 19 projects, Engineering 13 and Energy eight, the least entries came from Computer Science and Mathematics with 1 project in each category.”

The Regional Eskom expo for young students has produced impressive results for the Northern Cape.

The expo, which hosted more than 100 learners, ended with the awards ceremony where learners from five Kimberley schools – Kimberley Girls High, William Pescodt High School, Northern Cape High School, Technical High School, and St. Patricks CBC Kimberley, were awarded gold for their projects.

“At the annual prestigious Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF), selected students from 35 expo regions in South Africa then compete against the best young scientists from around the country and the world,” said spokesperson JeVanne Gibbs.

Northern Cape High School learner Cady Govender won best female project, titled “Mathematician’s guide to neuroscience: Assessing the morphometrics and physiopathology of brain tumours using fractal analysis”.

St Patrick’s CBC learner Chrishna Tefera won best innovative project, titled “Biodegradable, eco-edible plastic”, in the engineering category.

Labeba Elmokadam and Wavhuda Mashapa from William Pescodt won best development project, titled “Securing the future”, also in the engineering category.

The social sciences category had 19 projects, engineering 13, and energy eight. The least entries were in computer science and mathematics with one project each.

The expo does not stop here as the national competition is set to take place at the end of this year and the contestants that will be selected will be the best of the best to compete against other young scientists and international young scientists.
